Un confronto tra filosofia, storia della scienza, religione giudaico cristina e mitologie. Un racconto che si ripete in varie forme: gli elementi ricorrenti sono l’universo che ha avuto origine dal “Caos” e la temporalità del mondo. Da qui nasce la domanda fondamentale sull’universo, se questo abbia avuto origine o meno. La svolta si ha nel 1929, quando grazie alle osservazioni di Hubble e  successivamente  confermato dalla scoperta della radiazione cosmica di fondo negli anni ’60, si scopre che l’universo è in espansione, frantumando l’idea di cosmo stazionario come era sempre stato immaginato, persino da Einstein. Dai dati scoperti, si suppone quindi un’esplosione iniziale, chiamata singolarità, che ha dato origine all’universo e che ha provocato un’asimmetria dal punto di vista temporale (il tempo va avanti e non indietro) e dall’altra parte una simmetria dal punto di vista spaziale.  Quando ci si interroga sulla forma dell’universo, non si può parlare di cosmologia, ma di cosmologie, perché vi sono varie ipotesi e analizzando le varie immagini che si sono susseguite nella storia dell’universo, si potrebbe ipotizzare che l’universo sia sorto dal nulla oppure abbia avuto origine da un qualcosa, da una “hyle” preesistente, che sia essa caos o vuoto quantistico, ovvero lo stato minimo di energia presente nell’universo, confermato da esperimenti come l’effetto Casimir. A domande del genere l’uomo non trova risposta, ma certo è che, in un modo o nell’altro, l’uomo non smetterà di sforzarsi di raccontare la sua origine, ponendosi delle domande di senso che portano la cosmologia a essere qualcosa in più rispetto alla concezione che la vede un semplice sottogruppo della fisica: la cosmologia fa dialogare e collega diverse discipline e per questo non la si può limitare in confini ben precisi.

“In Prologue, Of High and Far-off Times, the author traces back earlier roots of scientific thought, particularly in the astronomy of the Neolithic revolution (4000-6000 B.C.)  and the technology of the Stone Age. But these were also times of religious conceptions, astrology, and the great myths.” (Hinshaw 1963). Giorgio de Santillana (1902-1974) was an eclectic scholar, who studied history of science and its origins from a particular point of view. He graduated in Physics in Rome. After he collaborated with his professor Enriques. The collaboration will led to the publication of the volume History of scientific thought: the ancient world, which should have represented the first tome of an impressive work on the progress of scientific thought throughout the ages of humanity. Santillana continued his studies on scientific thought. In 1961, he published The Origins explaining how the models of the ideas of science were born in ancient times. The hand of the beginning of scientific thought is moved further and further forward from the archaic societies. He thought that the astronomers of Babylon had unknown predecessors in prehistoric times: the myths and legends, from the world, can be deciphered as the technical language of archaic astronomers.

This paper is dedicated to understanding de Santillana's approach to the history of science, one that is habitually left out of historiographical discussion. Santillana's approach to history of science is significantly different from those with which we are more familiar. At the outset, he argued that science is like a novel and a creation, and that we cannot study science without integreting it into a larger vision:

"...science is a creation, in the same way as art or literature, with which it has deep connections. Its history presents the same problems and the same pitfalls as a history of literature, it cannot be treated simply as a chain of filiations, whatever the merit of scholarly investigations on influences. Creation being it is, there is a positive danger in trying to constrain it and pin it down too definitely in the causal channels of what is called history of ideas".
For Santillana, science does have a universal function in that it represents the ordering capacity of thought. Science has in itself something entirely humanistic, namely its interplay of creative images, its own experiences in the search for truth, which tie up with all other forms of intellectual search.​

Talking about “unity and disunity”, we meet in our way the figure of Giorgio Diaz de Santillana (1902-1974), complex and eclectic scholar, who studied history of science and his origins with a particular point of view.

We see this theme as a trait-d'union in his works, for first, in the idea of culture that he took from his teacher Federigo Enriques. In Italy, humanistic and scientific culture were separated with the education reform of Giovanni Gentile, 1923. The Gentile’s reform had underlined the institutional difference between educational culture and operational preparation. This dichotomy was reflected in the university model, in which philosophy was linked to the Faculty of Letters, destroying the idea of Enriques of a single Faculty, of a united vision of knowledge.
This disunity of culture is an absurd idea for de Santillana; he continued study of history and origin of scientific thought through primitive cosmology. He talk of a profound unity between scientific activity and mystical and religious activity in books as Storia del pensiero scientifico, The origin of scientific thought and mostly in his latest works. He found unity in the ancient mythologies, in which the apparent disunity of the ancient stories from all the word, is like a puzzle that create an unifying  figure.

The mythological language is the first scientific language, that talk about stars, constellations, movements of the sky.

Moreover in ancient time, also mankind perceived itself in harmony and unity with the universe and nature, differently from now.
“The relationship of thought with nature in classical times was very different from ours; not the search for a breakthrough point from which to overwhelm the enemy, but the search for a harmony, a proportion, a rhythm in which one enters. Man conceives himself as living within nature, not opposed to it.”

With this talk I want to answer these questions: what do we know about Giorgio de Santillana? Who was him? Why does a physics historian have to know and study him?
This paper aim to show de Santillana study’s approach to history of science, because actually there are no traces of it in the narrow secondary bibliography.

L’uomo è un animale che racconta e sin dall’antichità, le storie che si sono susseguite sono tante, alcune simili tra loro, altre molto particolari, ma tutte si confrontano con l’inizio del tempo, ovvero quando ha avuto origine il cosmo. Mentre la domanda che ci poniamo spesso è se sia nato prima l’uovo o la gallina, i nostri antenati nelle varie parti del mondo si chiedevano invece se fosse nato prima l’uovo o l’universo.
L’uovo cosmico è un archetipo cosmogonico ricorrente nei più diversi miti delle civiltà antiche. Scrive, l’antropologo, Mircea Eliade nel Trattato di storia delle religioni: “Il motivo dell'uovo cosmogonico, attestato in Polinesia, è comune all'India antica, all'Indonesia, all'Iran, alla Grecia, alla Fenicia, alla Lettonia, all'Estonia, alla Finlandia, ai Pangwe dell'Africa occidentale, all'America centrale e alla Costa occidentale dell'America del Sud …”
Prendendo in rassegna alcune delle attestazioni più rilevanti tra le diverse culture si noterà un fil rouge nelle diverse storie, fino ad arrivare alla Teogonia esiodea. “Dunque per primo fu Caos” . Giorgio Diaz de Santillana (1902-1974), fisico e storico della scienza, mostra come il Caos, questo stato primordiale di vuoto, questo gorgo buio, sia un archetipo presente in molte culture. Prendendo in analisi il suo libro, Il Mulino di Amleto, vedremo come nelle mitologie e nei racconti dal mondo troviamo il primo linguaggio scientifico dell’uomo. Gorghi, maelstrom, alberi e mulini, non sono altro che coordinate celesti. Gli antichi, per de Santillana, avevano scoperto, prima di Ippocrate, la Precessione degli Equinozi. Sarà interessante proiettarsi nel pensiero arcaico così distante dalla nostra concezione del cosmo.
